Maggie Film Review

Maggie is a film not everyone will like, as it is pretty slow paced but still manages to maintain its tense atmosphere. The film focuses on the lives of people as they struggle through a killer epidemic.  Rather than the fast paced zombie killing action the film focuses on the human element and emotional connect between the characters. This film is drama/thriller with a few scares but not enough to classify it as a horror film. (While it can still be Creepy as hell)

Imagine a world where a disease is killing humanity and turning them into zombies. That part is easy we have seen a multitude of films with this concept. But this film has one little difference, if you get bitten by the infected you don’t turn into a zombie within a few minutes or hours but instead it can take up 12 weeks. The world is thrown upside down, still government authorities are in control. Those who get infected are tagged, observed then quarantined  and disposed off before they turn. What we get to see in this film is a very different approach to the zombie genre.

There are moments in the film that make you wonder what would be worse, dying within a few minutes of getting infected or living with the infection in pain as you slowly turn into a living corpse. The film is about Maggie (Abigail Breslin) who gets infected and runs away from home. Her father  Wade (Arnold Schwarzenegger) finds her and brings her back home . The family is trying to take care of Maggie for the last few days of her life. The real crux of the film is the relationship between Maggie and her Father Wade and how he will do anything to save his daughter.

The film is very bleak and the environments and tone of the film justify that perfectly. Hats off to the Director Henry Hobson for creating this creepy atmosphere perfectly. I am really glad Arnie is back into acting and has done a brilliant job in the film.  Abigail Breslin has also done a fabulous job playing the young Maggie. The performance by the actors is what makes this worth a watch. The tension of not knowing how long Maggie has left and that at any moment she could go from a sick teenager to a zombie that is a threat to the rest of the family is what really drives the film.

Should you watch it :- If you like a drama thriller based in a zombie apocalypse and you are a fan of the Arnold I highly recommend this film. If you are expecting a fast paced zombie movie then this is not going to be fun for you. Overall I personally loved the film even if it was a bit slow paced.

The Film is releasing in Theaters on 29th May 2015 and worth a check out if you are into the genre.

I give it a  3.5
