Avengers Age of Ultron Film Review

Avengers Age of Ultron Film Review

We were planning on starting a film review section for a while now. What better way to begin this new section than a sequel to one of the biggest franchise in the Film Industry. I will try to keep this review brief and as spoiler free as possible. If you haven’t seen the first film “The Avengers” in 2012, I highly recommend watching that before you go in for the sequel. The Avengers films as well the individual marvel films share a combined universe and thus all the stories and plot lines are interconnected. The first Avenger film does a very good job of introducing all the main characters like Iron Man, Thor, the Hulk, Black Widow, Hawk-eye and Captain America. So even if you have missed the individual films it brings you up to speed on the plot so far. There are a lot of references and inside jokes which a person might not get if they haven’t seen the other films.

Avengers Age of Ultron Review

Joss Whedon’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” does everything the original Avengers did and does it better in most aspects. The Action is more high-octane, the Special Effects are spectacular, the one liners are to die for and the plot wasn’t half bad either. Unlike the first film the story begins with a bang as the Avengers are attacking a Hydra base (bad guys) to retrieve Loki scepter. Unlike the first film here right from the start you can see they are better organised and working efficiently as a team under the leadership of (Chris Evans) Captain America. They retrieve the scepter but not before one of the new enhanced character “Scarlet Witch” messes around with Tony Stark’s (Robert Downey Jr.) mind. After the events of the first Avengers film, Stark has been in constant fear of another alien invasion which would result in the end of the world and has been working on a defense system which would be able to handle any such invasion. This peacekeeper system is called Ultron. Stark discovers the existence of an potential Artificial Intelligence system inside Loki’s scepter which would be capable of running the Ultron system. Guess no one saw the Terminator films in the marvel universe :P. The A.I. activates itself and well, decides to destroy the Avengers. So begins the Avengers mission to stop Ultron and save the world.

Avengers Age of Ultron Review
HULK  V/s Iron Man

There is a scene where Iron man fights the hulk in this huge armored suit and it is beyond epic. What I really liked about this film apart from the well shot action sequences and amazing special effects was the character development. There is a lot of chemistry between Bruce Banner / The Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) as she has become the anchor to help the Hulk with his transformation back to human form . We get to learn about Hawkeye and his family and glimpses into the deep dark secrets of the other heroes. We are also introduced to our two big new characters, specifically Quicksilver (Aaron Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). They side with Ultron and a scene involving a monologue explains their pretty valid reasons for hating Stark and his friends. ( In fact you kind of feel bad for the two)

Quicksilver (Aaron Johnson) and Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen)

Robert Downey Jr. has done a much better job in this film than when he was in Iron Man 3. Still I feel Ultron voiced by (James Spader) has done an outstanding job as the villain of the story. Just imagine an evil and even more narcissistic Tony Stark and that is Ultron. Thor played by (Chris Hemsworth) is pretty much the eye candy for all the ladies and he plays the thunder gods role to the letter. I really wish they would have developed Captain America’s character a little more like they did for the others. Too bad our favourite hero/villain Loki is completely absent in the film.

AGE-ULTRON

There are a few things which prevent Avengers Age of Ultron from being a 5/5 and that is the lack of an original plot. I guess I expected more since the first Avenger film was so good. Also the fact that Tony Stark is responsible for creating Ultron doesn’t cause much tension between the team which is a bit surprising considering Captain America and Tony Stark have never seen eye to eye on anything. Scarlett Johansson’s character Black Widow is also only given a small romantic sub plot, I feel they could have done much more with her. I’m sure the next Avengers film “Infinity Wars” will allow the story of these heroes to properly develop.

Overall, this film is the perfect mix of action, drama, sci-fi and comedy. The film should only be watched in 3D and if possible IMAX 3D. Trust me, it’s worth it. I’m sure most of the people reading this have already seen the film or are going to see it over the weekend. If not I highly recommend you watch this film, as it is a total entertainer.

My Rating :  Star 4
