Just like the trailers promised, the first half of Katti Batti saw a quirky relationship come to full form between our protagonist Maddy (Imran Khan) and his eccentric and powerhouse girlfriend Payal (KanganaRanaut). But I would like to differ with most of the critics since I think it isn’t fair to be so harsh on a film, which showcases the trials in a relationship. And lets not forget that reality is way stranger than fiction, hence I am viewing it in the right spirits along with the lows or hardships, which were shown in their relationship. I knew this one is going to be a romantic comic roller coaster with much much more and it became even better in the second half according to me(The lump in my throat is a proof of that). I liked the flash backs and the pace at which the Katti Batti took us in the past lives of Maddy and Payal’s love story.
This love story starts in their college where Maddy is totally awestruck with the spunky, outgoing and quirky Payal. But yet he knew from the time he lays his eyes on her that she’s the one for him. Despite the fact that she’s not in for a serious relationship and neither is she looking for one. But as they say actions do speak louder than words and never say never. The chirpy Payal’s love or rather Maddy’s belief that they are made for each other, takes her to Mumbai to start a new life with each other. If leaving your city, your parents, giving up on your dreams isn’t love, then what is? Like all the other couples in the world, they seem to be having quite a bumpy ride. There comes a point where they decide to cancel their Goa trip right outside the airport when Maddy looses it and calls it quits. But the kind of love he had for her was way bigger than any fight. Within 30 seconds of driving away, he stops the cab to run back where he had left her (at the airport). At this point, I must mention that Imran’s earnest acting and his believability factor was at another level. This has happened with all of us – We say or do what we don’t mean with the person we love the most and then probably regret it the next minute!!! He searches for her, tries contacting friends, family, but to no avail. She goes MIA and later on he comes to know she has left the city and settled in Delhi. Not only that, she will be soon getting married to a guy who used to be her ex at one point.
Maddy tries getting to her, reaching all the common links, friends that could lead him to her. But they all want to help him or share her wedding details with him due to their past history and how he had left her stranded even for a while. I need to mention here one thing for sure.. There is one scene in the film which made me teary eyed. That is when Maddy is asking for a common friend of theirs Kangana’s whereabouts and he narrates to her an incident. He says – “Once we both had a very ugly fight and I said some things to her. She went inside the bathroom and closed the door. She stayed on that side of the wall and me on the outside for hours on end. I kept apologizing because I knew it was my fault. Finally I had to write down “sorry” on a piece of paper atleast 50 times before she stepped out. Aisi hai meri Payal. She needs to be manaod properly and she wouldn’t agree and forgive so easily.” Aren’t we all like kids at times and don’t we all need that extra love and assurance just to know and reiterate the fact that he loves us all that and much much more. We girls need to know that the guy we are with loves us way more than we know of and if he has realized the silly mistake, doesn’t matter who’s at fault, taking that first step and making that first move is important. ACTIONS do speak louder than words… Hence, speak up, shower that extra affection, make them feel special and most importantly hold them closer to your chest as you never know for how long you have this blessed journey of togetherness. My grandma always tells me, I never see films, I understand the emotions and goshh, Nikhil Advani had me holding my sweetheart’s hand throughout this one and also the moments like I mentioned above had me thinking WOW very few can bring such realness with such ease.
So once Maddy has reached Payal’s destination wedding which is just about to begin. What happens next?? Will Payal forgive him and go back to Maddy? Or will Payal go ahead with the marriage as planned. Now, here’s when an emotional twist has been brought in by the captain of the ship – Nikhil Advani. You need to watch Katti Batti with your parents and your loved ones as this is one film that understands bonds, true love and commitment. When you say these words to someone – “LOVE YOU!”, you need to show it with your behavior, in your actions and just with your being. Everyone can love, but can everyone walk that extra mile even if the walk is harder than they imagined. Love, loved and lost or wanting to love… Whatever the emotion, do not give this one a miss!!!
Kangana has fully lived upto Payal’s character but Imran Khan stole each and every scene right from the chuckles to the sighs! Nikhil Advani, you have made a film that will be understood only by the people who know the language of – LOVE!
