Spices restaurant in JW Marriott Juhu, Mumbai definitely has to be in the top fine dining restaurants for Asian cuisines. Apart from Thai cuisine, they also serve Chinese and Japanese food. The ambience is surreal with such low lights making for a great romantic set-up and they also have a special sushi bar along with an interactive teppanyaki grill that serves a vast range of innovative sushi and other delicacies. I was super excited to be here for two reasons – Travel & Fish. Travel because I got to share so many stories with like-minded fellow travellers that were all brought together under one roof by “Holiday IQ” for a special traveller meet-up. I have recently started reviewing my holidays on Holiday IQ platform and I am enjoying bringing forth my experiences to the real travellers and wanderers just like me.

Another exciting bit about this night was the special sushi session where we got to see live sushi making sessions of different types of sushi and even try our hands on some. The chef that made this a really special one was none other than Chef Venetio Cadavida aka Chef Don Don! He is one of the top ten Master Chefs of the World and is the best when it comes to Japanese cuisine. He made dinner indeed a special one for each and every one of us by specifically being involved and over looking whatever was made.

He took an interesting sushi making session where he taught us to make all 3 types of sushi and boy oh boy these were the best I have ever had. Check out the pictures and you will know what I mean.

  • Maki Sushi – Chumaki is the usual rice and other stuffing you prefer inside nori or seaweed or soy paper. I prefer these the most to the other sushi and I need to mention that they were the most authentic tasting sushi ever.

  • Uramaki Sushi – Also known as the inside out sushi, since here the rice is on the outside and the nori or sea weed is in the inside portion. One doesn’t have to worry about nori splitting since this can be kept out for long as nori isn’t on the outer layer.

  • Maguro Sushi – It has rice tucked under a raw tuna flesh that seems fully fine from the surface without any signs of threads running through the meat. Chef Don Don used a blow-torch to seal the top portion of maguro and presented it to us with some of his organic home-grown spicy herbs.

We then shifted towards the main course in the Spices Restaurant at JW Marriott:

The Starters :

  • Hot Tezaru Soba –

Soba consists of the noodles made from buckwheat flour. Afterall, Soba is the Japanese name for buckwheat. Other than the soba noodles it also had carrots, prawns, tofu, pokchoy, inoki with poruring hot chicken dashi consommé. You can enjoy these chilled and also by dipping in a sauce of your choice.

  • Grilled Tomato Salad (Left) –

For someone who isn’t a big tomato fan like me, will still love the burnt grilled tomato dish made by Chef Don Don. It also contains warm seaweed and grilled prawns for you seafood lovers.

  • Teppanyaki Yesai (Right) –

I loved the leaf-shaped copper plate on which this was served. Healthy and tasty veggies like cabbage, carrots, onions, zucchini and bean sprouts were tossed into burnt soya butter garlic sauce. This dish was a big hit with all the vegetarians in the house.

  • Teppanyaki Grilled Lamb (Left) –

The lamb was roasted to perfection with butter garlic soya sauce. The rice puffs go so well with the lamb and add its own distinct flavour.

  • Japanese Fried Rice (Right)–

All you fried rice lovers be prepared to spoil yourselves with a fine tasting Japanese style fried rice served in a mini cooking pot. You have the option of choosing between prawns or chicken cooked in teppanyaki grill.

  • Lobster Served In Shell –

This was one huge lobster which had its meat served right inside its shell itself. It was grilled once again with butter garlic soya sauce. I think this really was one of the softest red meats I have ever had.

Dessert :

  • Tempura Ice-Cream –

Delicious mango ice-cream with a crispy layer that is topped with some hot chocolate. It is a perfect merger of hot and cold delight.

  • White Chocolate Blondie –

I ordered this sweet dish after reading about its ingredients – crispy fried wanton pieces along with cashew nuts and some mango ice cream. You get to choose your ice cream too.
